Aims to explore the case study cities through the ideas and theories prevailed in historical and contemporary times. The objectives are to: a) critically think on various approaches of urban design and b) enhance prevailing ideas of urbanism to acquire prior knowledge for the site visit to the case study cities. There will be class discussions on the debates on factors that drive the urban form, where the usage of online sources would be effectively practiced. It is important that the contemporary developments in cities to be connecting to the context and to offer to the idea of place-making. Connectivity is much more that movement patterns in a city and it is about people and place. The solution is in understanding and employing critical approach to the notion of ‘content’ as a purposeful narrative to powerful questions relevant to the context (Low, 2010). To begin with, the question is: What are the tangible and intangible characteristics of in-between spaces in a city at a street scale?

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Vibrant Movement- Bukit Bintang
An expressive linear movement in response of the circulation planning. Its network of roads journey whole and throughout the city. The intersecting junction provides a sense of street identity of the place; an intersecting movement which obstructs the pacing circulation of the road perpendicular of it. The constant flow of movement in and throughout depicts the ease of movement of getting to ones’ destination. The road circulates in-between of the mass-built forms, evoking the sense of a quality transitional journey throughout.
Fear Entombed- Bukit Bintang
A contradicting aspect felt through the seemingly contradicting materials of both ‘faces’ of the wall. What seems to be a pleasant journey through the path could bring a rather nervous, unwilling turn; the ‘scary’ wall deters it. The quality of being a soothing public realm is disturbed by the breaking of continuity throughout the path-space relation
Legibility and Character- Pasar Seni
A cultural recognition in the craft and depiction of context. The cultural reference towards the leading religion of the country. Wonderfully celebrated and showcased the elegance and beauty of the country, whilst to care the space its crafted underneath. It exists a commerce space mix pass-through circulation. Its repeated imagery evokes the transitional journey passing through it.
Lost of legacy?
Diminishing of heritable aspects as seen on urbanization. The emphasis on modernity in recent demand to cater the needs of people. The call juxtaposes then the need of additional spaces. Amidst the scale of these modern buildings, the proportion of these shophouses are on the verge of ‘extinction’. The heritable values can be depicted on these shophouses as they withstood the test of time and survive the flame of urbanization
Singapore
Colourful gallery- Haji Lane
Attractive pattern along the stretch of the path of building arrangement. A scenic journey along the pathway enhances the visual perception of the area. It speaks a certain dialogue among the visitors passing by to reflect the satire of reticence through extent of the space. It intertwines the quality of livelihood among the realm within.
Transition of levels- Marina Bay Sands
The different levels induce different quality of realm experience. The top tier levels demonstrate a rather destination wise circulation, while as it depresses down towards the ocean it begins to elevate the mood of calm and serenity along with the relation of the ocean. The space in between the pathway and ocean separates and isolates a certain experience within. It demonstrates how the in-between space affects the mind: the eminence of peace.
Pass, bye- Orchard road
Movement circulates the epitome through the wide pathway between the mass of buildings and the road. Linear movement in and throughout the whole stretch of journey catering the people the need of direction from a place to another. The pathway conjoins the adjacent street as well as the row of commerce houses along the whole stretch. The wide pathways eases the movement for visitors and pedestrians alike.
Hinting presence- Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum
A blend of culture, religion, and modesty sits silently with the surrounding context. The temple-style form of a building sits along with its adjacent siblings of Chinese eclectic shophouses along the street of South Bridge Road. This temple is a symbol of Buddhism and how it responds to the need of religion of the people in the city. The visual cluster and hierarchy depicts its motif as an active home for the communal nodes. Reciting its prosperity and humbleness, the temple could never be replaced by modernity. It sits individually and collectively among its Chinese landscape.
Amsterdam Sporenburg, Netherlands
Subtle difference- Seinwachterstraat
The sudden appearance of a vast statement through perception of distance in built form. The Whale building by Frits Van Bongen is an iconic form of landmark of the island. It caters the characteristic of the place as well as its vast scale opposes in contrast of the rather linear terrace typology of houses nearby. A continuity is enclosed perceptually of the Whale building, a feel of being intimidated  aroused in view of the vast structure.
Stream Life- Strokerkade
A new way to move around through its ocean context. The vast open ocean water surrounding the whole of Borneo Sporenburg island is utilized by having other means of transport like boat or yacht to traverse throughout. Their culture and lifestyle entwined with the ocean as part of their life. The means of quality of views and vistas as well as the quality of peace lengthens surrounding the island.
Seemingly different- YoYo café
Through alleyways, opportunity sprouts in mind. The spaces in-between each house deters activity to be done as they are rampantly packed and often isn’t very breathable. Efficient minds work together to create a valuable humble space of the alleyways. The planning reflects the efficient planning of the Borneo Sporrenburg.. one sees it as a dead space; others, an opportunity.
Space to let- The Whale Building
Surrounded by the lush leveling of the compound space revolves within the middle. The greenery space subtracts the whole void propagating upwards of the whole solid volume. A sense of emphasis potential is given through the in-decent break of space. The greenery resents inside gives a quality of public realm giving the ease of tension towards working persons dwelling through the openspace.
Fish out of water- The Whale
A sense of visual breakage as seen to the juxtapose of the linear arrangement of the buildings. The sudden placement and orientation of the building sits at the middle position of the island. Creating a sense of character; a noticeable landmark. The contrast between the building and the surrounding context makes it more distinguishable yet remarkable.Built to accommodate needs of and for the people, it’s to acknowledge the fact of consideration of creating livability within the city.
Neighbourhood- Scheepstimmermanstraat
The different faces of each house as to hold the individual identity of each residents that inhabits it. The landscape architect of the firm West 8 planned a district with one of the streets on which residents were free to design their own houses on the waterfront. The Scheepstimmermanstraat is an example of user participation in housing. This, in sense, improves quality of life on the island and thus giving a sense of character: appreciation
Integration- Keesje Bridgedeplantsoen
A diagonal linear cut along the arrangement of residential nodes. To create livability within a space, there should exist a sort of buffer zones with a passive programming of space to be implemented to. Integrating a sort of greenery feature as to respond with lack of dense vegetation of the site context of the island. The parks present a natural engraved space to enhance the quality of life and a suppose to make a certain city organization be more attractive.
