MIDNIGHT SONATA CULTURAL AND INNOVATION CENTRE FOR MUAR

final site

What is culture and is it respectful to innovate it? these are the questions submitted before the process of thinking otherwise. A faded trait in culture is persistent in any parts of the world as the demand for modern suitability  insists that intangible happiness and morale values are not of any effort of continuation. Thus, the decline of the culture in tradition. Why is there a need to preserve such culture? why is there a need for innovation? how is it relevant to todays' society? the answer is: being human. We learnt such notion back when we were in the schooling days, each day we grow more ignorant and succumb to trend rather than tradition; we tend to forget events that shaped lifestyle.

The calling of preserving such traditional culture is a need for such context. The extent of how architecture can involve itself to be an opportunity to showcase such traits. Thus, allowing the interpretation of what memory is meant to an of a human being.

Muar's site analysis

Preliminary studies

 23  /   4  /   2019

The study implies the understanding of traditional urban study upon the traditional town of Muar. Basic urban knowledge such as Kevin Lynch's urban study along with our own study of this town collectively  implies the dormant stage of this town in relevance with modern bustling settlements like Malacca, and Johor Bahru.

Being a quiet town for retirees, here lies a heap of untold stories that is yet to discover. By understanding the lifestyle of the  people within a traditional urban setting; we understand culture and tradition. This intangible aspect derives the basic human values of how cultural interaction occurs amongst one another. The study concludes how the site could be an opportunity for a setting to showcase a cultural and innovation centre for Muar.

Sharing is Muar. the collective and interdependence  among people's identity, tradition, and heritage. Its a culture which is prominently not a focus of. An uncultured culture of ignorance yet robust. The society lives under the changing times of economic trend which introduces several form of sharing: sharing shop lot's value, spaces, a place for venue, seating. It cumulatively creates a positive urban atmosphere of togetherness among the people within the urban setting.

A series of complementing among each other. That was what we conclude for our urban study for the cultural lifestyle and what is to for innovation of Muar. Cheers for the great Mr. Eric into guiding us along our cherishful endeavors throughout the semester.

Interim study

 20/   6   /   2019

This creativity approaches to the finalization of the design scheme of the Cultural and innovation centre for Muar. The intention scheme from the micro site study is retained and improved over the reached time of the interim. The exploration is through the sense of model making. The idea toys with having repetition s the main concept for the factor in making architecture work at the site.

The question into how to we make something  bold yet timid  in design?

These developments models serve as a study of comprehending the finalized design of the iconic 12 walls of architecture as a cultural and innovation centre for Muar.

The design develops into the final scheme of design where it interprets the tendency of creating interest through depth. Depth through repetition along a perpendicular axis of main infrastructure across the town. A solid(-ish) built form which creates a different realm. An audible realm which secludes the interior sound against the exterior noise.

To make spaces which intervenes with music and cultural performance arts. To make them, interesting.

The centre accommodates, parking amenities, meeting halls, venues for exhibition, galleries, sound training centre, fix house, etc. which creates the sense of place for the people and sound as a home for culture

sound menderer.

Making soundplay and theatricals an interesting instrument for interaction and attention to the people.

Space making for the soulful common.

Thus,

Midnight Sonata Sound House for Muar.

From here, the design of making the cultural and innovation centre into something out of the ordinary. By expressing the planes into something rather vivid and elaborated. The piece in architecture which answers the making of: timid yet bold in design. By making a foundation of a much needed cultural landmark which means something to the traditional music and theatrical arts society into strumming resonance back into the modern age, paying homage to the cultural meaning needed for Muar. Expositioning opportunities in cultural performance among the fellow people of Muar whilst potentially for the whole of Malaysia, to be a chance for this quiescent town to be a centre to elaborate such culture and tradition in an innovative manner. A cultural icon for the town: The Midnight Sonata

A round-up

 26  /   7   /   2019

Making what's interesting and wild is eventually fun and worth it. It's because the project I did was something I liked. My gratitude knows no bounds for the efforts of Mr. Eric Chang in his support and aid of my (dumb) idea. Managing time was fruitful in completing the project, time is the abstract of daily measurement; making use of every moment/ every tutorial contributes to the almost never-ending period of studio design. Doing what I know I am capable of, at this period, is effective in producing animated diagrams and representations of the cultural center as time, again, is imperative. the objective is to complete a wonderful project that one will be happy about.

Time concludes my point in this semester. It was a tedious yet enjoyable endeavor attempting the subject of architecture. The most important thing when making an idea is by having an abstract idea of it; make it fun and not look like a building. Deconstructing the constructed and making ideas that you enjoy. It's because you make your own ideas. Take that dive. Be happy. You're human, dude.

This date marks the end of my architectural journey. It was a wonderful ride, making relationships among the sites all the way from the first Janda Balik, cold Cameron Highlands, colorful Penang, old lang, subtle Ipoh, and the quiescent Johor.
