BEN - BOW LEARNING CENTER IN KLANG

Ben-Bow cottage

Klang heeds the call towards a new form of social living through an architectural intervention which embodies the vibrancy nature in people to further gentrify the vicinity of the area regularly. Thus, the proposal of a design to interpret the needs of the people ideal learning centre of what can be done for the people, whilst an initiative adjourning the sprout of negative perception of the withered site. The Ben-Bow learning centre as a catalyst to reform the social vibrancy amongst the immediate column of people, to inject a social bond with one another which then results to the meaning of the site and its context.

Preliminary studies

The Preliminary Studies is a preparatory assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city. This study aims to introduce the basic in urban studies and its relation to architecture (studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a Learning Centre and architectural responses for urban infills.)

The Preliminary Studies comprises of three components: Site Documentation, Site Analysis, and Precedent Studies of Urban Infills and Learning Centre.

The Site Documentation and Analysis ensures an understanding of the site of what the Learning centre initially should become to be a beneficial focal point of an urban infill within the site. The architectural responses of designing a comprehensive and relevant urban infill/ Learning Centre.

a groups effort to make a night less of a living hell

The site analysis we fabricated insists that the dire situation of Klang being sort of “detached” as it exists within a realm of its own. Considered it vintage reality where it accommodates to the service-centric atmosphere for the people. The temporal vitality of the town is proven otherwise whereby a fluctuation of activities bestows upon the area from time-to-time; but when along Jalan Besar, a sense of formality is present where people intents to carry out their activities desired such as walking and shopping. The study carried out elaborates the belief of Klang whereby being it “touch-&-go”. The subject of Klang being "detached' resonates an interest to reconnect or simply, to re-embrace the livelihood of the site providing the necessary architectural intervention by introducing the elements of being to correspond with the context along Jalan Besar, Klang.

Micro site study

After the examination of the site, a careful conduct of self interpretation within the vicinity of the context and to provide a thorough interpretation of how the site can be improved and the  pioneer investigation of the initiative the Ben-Bow Learning Centre in Klang. The interpretation of the study is elaborated through A2 board specification and a poem.

Interim study

This initiative approaches to the finalization of the design scheme of the Learning Centre in Klang. The intention scheme from the micro site study is retained and improved over the reached time of the interim. The exploration is through the sense of model making. The idea sparks with the intention of play of planes and then finally formatted into an enclosed structure. The exploration starts with a rather abstract touch which then slowly formulates to the end result. These developments models serve as a study of comprehending the final touch onto the design scheme of the Ben-Bow Learning Centre in Klang

The design develops into the final scheme of design where it interprets the tendency of creating interest through enclosure. The enclosure setting fits the contexts of creating a separate realm in conjunction of the prevailing street context. The realm where people can retreat and dwell into by having spaces to informally and formally elaborate learn through the form of classrooms &workshops, public rentable outlets giving a sense of place for anyone, a canteen to rehydrate oneself, public toilets accessible for everyone, dynamic facade initiative where greenery can be planted and replanted, and a compact "park". Spaces of place-making which develops with humankind in relation with the built form.

A round-up

Enduring the progressive overload in studies, this semester dwell in-depth with a much deeper relation of bodily context with human and public domain relation. The architectural intervention of how it can extend the presence of a public realm through built form. a presence where informally accessed everyday with the intention of keeping an enclosed relation of a realm within its form. This exploration thrives with the singularity of an object in unity with the collective whole. A relation that succumbs to the society needs and efforts to change the perception of Klang into a character of social vibrancy. Urbanism is an extent in architecture which I feel should be the epitome into creating architecture itself. Without a proper composition of a city; architecture would simply mean nothing.
