Case Study: Analyzing passive design strategies

14  /   11  /   2017

Passive design does not require mechanical heating or cooling. Buildings that are passively designed take advantage of natural climate to maintain thermal comfort. Incorporating the principles of passive design in building:

  •  Significantly improves comfort

  • Reduces or eliminates heating and cooling bills

  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions from heating, cooling, mechanical ventilation and lighting.

Building envelope is a term used to describe the roof, walls, windows, floors and internal walls of a building. In a tropical climate, the envelope should controls heat gain and exclusion of rainwater. Well-designed envelopes maximize cooling through air movement and exclude the solar radiation. The fundamental principles of passive design are relatively simple and can be applied to various climate zones, house types and construction systems.

OBJECTIVE
  1. Identifying and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and people

  2. understanding what is thermal comfort and discuss factors relating to thermal comfort

  3. Analyzing the effect of thermal comfort factors in a person and in a space

  4. Criticizing design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525 , UBBL, and GBI.

The analysis upon the effectiveness of the wind chimney and the sun shading device that is implemented in the design of the gallery house
Shalini Ganendra Fine Art (SGFA) is an independent exhibition and cultural space specializing in Asian contemporary art & design with particular focus upon emerging regions and movements. The gallery is committed to building artistic community and international exchange, through engagement, discussion, documentation and promotion of cross cultural art discourse.
Amidst its artistic appeal programme, the building intends to provide comfortability in the means of naturally ventilated openings and awnings that provide cover from sun ray but allowing sunlight to pass through the interior spaces. Although effective or not, the gallery provides sufficient spacious thermal comfort during the sunny days with the aid of minimal mechanical aids, like the ceiling fans.
The research was carried out during sunny , rainy , and cloudy days during the month of June. Analysis and record are varied during the period of visitation to the gallery house; but still provided approximate and average value from data taken when visit and thorough online research.

A round-up

These are the boards that me and my team have prepared putting our knowledge and information/analysis having my team carrying out and cooperating our given tasks. From this assignment i get adequate knowledge of building science relationship in where design and practicality of architectural elements intertwines. The use of efficient energy should be less and having green friendly building is the way to improve living standards in our climate, and to lessen the pollution in our country. Building envelope is a term used to describe the roof, walls, windows, floors and internal walls of a building.
