Case study of building services in office buildings

 11  /  5  /   2018

This group project to perform a case study on building services systems applied and installed in an office building less than 14 storeys. We are to discover and investigate the common building service systems that are used in a bigger volume for the users. This exercise requires us to develop our own understanding and analysis in the application of building services to make a building technically functional. This discovery will be useful in their future design studio projects to ensure that the building design proposals are practical and efficient.

The task were to elaborate and identify the practicality of the systems within Menara PMI

  • Mechanical ventilation

  • Mechanical transportation

  • Fire protection (active and passive)

  • Construction methods that could be used- special fixings and fixtures

LEARNING OUTCOME

  1. To introduce us to the basic principles. process and equipment of various building services systems found in buildings (experiential learning)

  2. To expose us into the integration of various building services systems in a building.

  3. To allow us to demonstrate our understanding of building services systems and statutory requirements

  4. To develop our understanding and familiarization in applying the correct graphic communications according the required standards(MSI 1184)

The report outcome of analyzing the building services is documentated and compacted within a format of a report
Aside from the report, a videologue is fabricated to showcase the building services of the decades old building
It was a fun and interesting experience. The freedom to explore within an office ,in KL, building along with a kind tour around the building by Mr. Norazli. He was gladful to allow us to record and explore the various building service functions of Menara PMI. This whole experience was filled with laughter, yet knowledge; fun whilst tiring, but to involve ourselves and to understand the practicality of these services in the building, a little humor attains the human values in us.

Building services- sanitary and sewerage

 22  /  6   /   2018

An anatomy of a building will always compromise of sewerage and sanitary. They are where waste is managed and allocated moreover. Understanding the basic principles of implementing such services is essential to make a building a habitable whilst safe place to be. According to the By-Laws, we must abide with the regulations imposed for such amenities to work in a house. For this task, exploring how appliances and amenities are placed within the existing project of Ken's Home.

TASK

We are to demonstrate their understanding of building services by providing the most appropriate systems for the building, which include:

i) electrical supply system

ii) cold water and hot water supply system

iii) sewerage and sanitary system

iv) rainwater/ surface water drainage system

Along with the drawings to be reproduced into a computer-aided drawing with annotations which describe the planning and installation of all building services required. Students may also include specific clauses from the Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) or other relevant Acts, Laws or guidelines that narrate to the proposed systems into their presentation drawings.

and also to produce a catalogue of the fixatures in the house.

LEARNING OUTCOME

  1. Identify relevant information related to water and electrical supply, liquid waste disposal, sanitary and rainwater management system.

  2. Describe the planning of building services within the design and construction peripheries.

  3. Propose the more/most suitable systems for a specific type of building

Below presented, are the compilation of the appliance and sanitary within the home.
